Coastal towns along the Welsh shoreline were vulnerable targets, and Fishguard’s exposed harbour, active maritime trade, and lack of heavy defences made it an attractive objective. One of the most serious and well – documented incidents occurred in 1779, when the town came under direct attack during the American War of Independence

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ width_tablet=”” width_phone=”” width_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”0px|0px|0px|0px||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”17px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The attack was carried out by Captain Stephen Manhant, commander of the privateer vessel The Black Prince. Although often described as pirates, privateers like Manhant operated with official approval from enemy governments. Manhant sailed under the French flag, reflecting France’s alliance with the American revolutionaries against Britain. His mission was not random plunder but part of a wider strategy to weaken British trade, spread fear along the coastline, and pressure the British government by disrupting commerce and capturing sailors.

Fishguard was targeted because it was a recognised harbour, supplied coastal shipping, and lacked strong coastal artillery. The town was also seen as unlikely to offer effective resistance. Upon arriving off the coast in 1779, Manhant sent a formal demand ashore, insisting that the town pay a ransom of £1,000 a vast sum at the time, equivalent today to the value of a quarter of a million pounds. The demand followed a common privateering procedure: towns that paid were spared, while refusal often resulted in bombardment, burning or landing parties.

When Fishguard’s authorities refused to comply, Manhant carried out his threat. The attack lasted several hours, during which the Black Prince fired cannon shot towards the harbour and town. The bombardment caused panic among residents, damage to buildings, and disruption to shipping. While the physical destruction was limited compared to major naval engagements, the psychological impact was considerable.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://northpembrokeshiretours.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Captain-Stephen-Manhant.png” alt=”Privateer Captain Stephen Manhant” title_text=”Captain Stephen Manhant” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||2px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”1.8em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The sound of cannon fire, the sight of shot striking near homes and quays, and the fear of a landing party created widespread alarm.

Despite having no formal garrison or fortifications at the time, the town did not surrender. Local men organised themselves to defend the harbour, using small arms and makeshift positions, while others focused on protecting families and property. The rough coastal conditions, combined with resistance from shore and the risk of becoming trapped close to land, discouraged Manhant from attempting a full-scale landing. Instead, after demonstrating his firepower and making clear his intentions, he withdrew, having failed to extract ransom or occupy the town.

Captain Manhant was already notorious by the time he reached Fishguard. As commander of the Black Prince, he had destroyed or captured more than thirty British merchant vessels, inflicting serious damage on British trade routes. He also captured numerous British sailors, whom he treated relatively well – not out of mercy, but strategy. These prisoners were intended for exchange, as Manhant hoped to trade them for American captives held by the British, a practice common during the war.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_4_font=”||||||||” header_4_letter_spacing=”1px” header_4_line_height=”1.5em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The raid left a lasting impression on Fishguard and Goodwick. It exposed the vulnerability of the Welsh coastline and demonstrated how even small, remote communities could be drawn into international conflict. In response, local and national authorities ordered the construction of Fishguard Fort the same year, which was positioned to defend the harbour against future attacks. The fort symbolised a shift from reliance on isolation to active coastal defence and became a visible reminder of the town’s encounter with global warfare.

Today, the story of Manhant’s raid remains an important chapter in Fishguard’s history. It illustrates how the American War of Independence and Franco – British rivalry reached far beyond distant battlefields, affecting ordinary people in coastal Wales. The attack helped shape Fishguard’s defensive landscape and contributed to a strong local identity rooted in resilience, resistance, and maritime awareness – an identity that would be reinforced again just two decades later during the failed French invasion of 1797.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Pirate Attack on FishguardCaptain Manhant, commander of the Black Prince, had already destroyed or captured more than thirty British merchant vessels,and captured numerous British sailors, whom he treated relatively well – as hostages.Would the town pay his ransome demand of £1,000 (£250,000)?Pirate Attack on FishguardFishguard and Goodwick have a long and dramatic association with piracy […]

["post-250641","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
